Documentation required to put a child on the wait list is the same required to enroll a student.  Information regarding enrollment may be found on the MDUSD website

Monte Gardens Elementary School is a neighborhood and district-wide school of choice. Enrollment is open to students who reside in the Monte Gardens boundaries and students who reside in the MDUSD attendance boundaries.

Residents Enrollment

Families that reside in the Monte Gardens Attendance Area may enroll their student(s) at the Monte Gardens School Office Monday-Friday during office hours by appointment only.

Kindergarten Lottery

Children must be five years of age on or before September 1 of the year they start Kindergarten.  To be placed on the lottery waitlist, parents must sign up their student(s) in the Monte Garden Office the year prior to starting Kindergarten. This includes siblings of students currently attending Monte Gardens.

The Monte Gardens Kindergarten Lottery is held each year in December for children who will start Kindergarten the following August. Subject to the priorities described below, all students who sign up by the first Wednesday of December will be randomly assigned a lottery number and the available Kindergarten spaces will be filled in lottery number order. The lottery number also dictates a student’s placement on the choice wait list for future openings kindergarten through 5th grade. Twins will be given consecutive lottery numbers. If there is only one space available, one space will be offered. If that space is declined, twins will remain on the wait list and be offered the first opportunity to attend our program when two spaces are available. Students that are not in a priority category and that sign up after the Kindergarten lottery in December will be placed at the end of the wait list.

Kindergarten Pre-Registration

Written confirmation of students selected is mailed home in late December. Monte Gardens Kindergarten pre-registration will be held the last Friday in January. Only children from the lottery wait list who have received written confirmation will be registered.

Priority for Kindergarten

The Kindergarten Lottery provides priority, according to Board Policy, for incoming kindergarteners who reside within the Monte Gardens boundaries, siblings of current Monte Gardens students and children of employees at Monte Gardens. The following criteria must be met in order for an incoming kindergartener to have priority:

  • A Monte Gardens resident resides within the neighborhood zone established by the Mt. Diablo school district. Please check the district website (Student Services, Enroll Now, School Finder) to access your home school.
  • A kindergarten student must attend Monte Gardens Elementary with their older sibling for a minimum of one year. It is the responsibility of the parents to notify the office of any sibling relationships.
  • Parent/Guardian is an employee of the Mt. Diablo Unified School District assigned to Monte Gardens Elementary.

Grade Placement

Based on School Board Policy and California Education Code, a child shall be eligible for enrollment in Kindergarten if the child will have his/her fifth birthday on or before September 1. A student who does not meet the age eligibility criteria may not be enrolled in Kindergarten.

  • A child shall be eligible for enrollment in Transitional Kindergarten at the beginning of the school year if the child will have his/her fifth birthday between the following dates:  September 2 and December 2. Monte Gardens does not have a Transitional Kindergarten Program at this time. Residents may still enroll for transitional kindergarten at Monte Gardens and will be assigned an alternate site.
  • A child shall be admitted to first grade if the child will have his/her sixth birthday on or before September 1.
