Weekly News October 15, 2018

Carnoween is coming!  Don’t miss out on a family fun filled Halloween themed carnival that includes a Haunted House and a costume contest. (Please use discretion with costumes; nothing offensive or dangerous to others, no weapons or masks.) Carnoween will be on Friday, October 26.  Fliers will be sent home this week in the Monday Envelope.  You should have received an email from Regina Raj with information on how to help out and sign up.  Please use the link in the Important Documents and Links sections to purchase tickets online.

Students should be working on their book reports.  They have until next Friday to complete them. If your child has not chosen a book, they should find one this week.  Please help them work neatly and complete the entire assignment.

If you have read this far...please draw a HOUSE in the box at the top of your child's assignment sheet this week.  Thank you for reading!

What's Happening in A5

Last week we wrote back to our 3rd grade pen pals from Mrs. Romano's class at El Monte.   Students did a wonderful job responding to their letters and writing back to them.

We will continue working with Place Value.  By the end of this unit, students will be able to:  Understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones; e.g., 706 equals 7 hundreds, 0 tens, and 6 ones. Understand the following as special cases:

  • 100 can be thought of as a bundle of ten tens — called a "hundred."
  • The numbers 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900 refer to one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine hundreds (and 0 tens and 0 ones).
  • Count within 1000; skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s.
  • Read and write numbers to 1000 using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form.

Great job with math facts!  The first trimester goal for math facts is to complete at least 33 problems.  Please practice every day!

Our science Unit is called, Work of Water.  We have completed three Mystery Science lessons and will wrap up the unit with Mystery 4-Erosion Engineering, Save the Hills.
