Scripps National Howard Spelling Bee

Monte Gardens will be participating in the Spelling Bee this year for 3rd-5th grade students on Thursday, 2/15 at 4:00 pm. 1st-5th grade will be participating in a spell-a-thon fundraiser prior to this to help kick off the excitement for spelling. On Monday 1/8 a packet for grades 1-5 went home with spelling lists for spell-a-thon. Students should be collecting pledges for words spelled correctly. As a school we will give the spell-a-thon spelling test on Wednesday, 1/17. Students in 3rd-5th grade with perfect scores on spell-a-thon spelling test will be invited to participate in the spelling bee if they wish. We would like to have 2-3 students per class participate in the spelling bee. If classes have a large amount of students with perfect scores on spell-a-thon spelling test then grade levels can decide based on spelling grades or holding class spelling bees to recommend 2-3 students to move forward to spelling bee.

STEM Fair

The STEM fair this year will be Thursday, February 22nd. The STEM fair packet came home the Monday before Winter Break. This will be an at-home project where students may choose to do either a Science Project, using Scientific Method or a Engineering Project, using the Engineering Design Method. This is a mandatory project for all 4th and 5th grade students were they can show case their scientific discovery. Because it is a time intensive project I will be reducing the homework load over the next few weeks leading up to the STEM fair. The only part of the project I will be collecting will be the project entry form which was due Friday, January 12th. We have included several links on the 5th grade homepage to help assist students in coming up with project ideas if you have any questions please let me know.

FAMILY LIFE EDUCATION:

Instruction in this subject is included in the curriculum in Grade 5. Language Arts

This week we will be reading several non fiction stories and will begin the brainstrorming and rough draft of our expert topic project. Next week we hope to begin our new literature book.

Our Walk to Language groups will be focusing on reading several non fiction articles and writing a expository essay incorporating the information from the different articles. Students will be guided through the writing process with brain storming, planning, creating a rough draft with peer edit and a final draft.

Math

We are continuing with Module 3: Addition and subtraction of fractions. This is a very short module and we will be skipping the mid module and go right onto the End of Module Assessment which will be after lesson 16. We will be doing lessons 6-9 this week.

Social Studies

We are very happy to announce that Mrs. Rogers will be back on Monday!

Students have Social Studies everyday excluding Wednesdays.

Science

This week we will be exploring the phenomenon: Why do stars change with the seasons. Students will be introduced to the Earth’s orbital movement around the Sun, as a means of seeing why the constellations change.

Technology

Technology is taught by Mrs. Sugden. This week students be coding, typing and working on i-Ready lessons.
