Happy New Year!!!!!

January 8, 2018

I hope everyone had a restful and enjoyable holiday.  I wanted to thank all of you for the generous class gift!  I appreciate your kindness and generosity.

Before the break student's received an informational STEM Fair packet with example projects and a suggested timeline. The project entry form is due on Friday, Jan 12.   Please make sure your student stays focused and has a completed project to turn in on February 22.

The math test on function tables is coming home today.  Please review it with your student and return it by Friday.

Please review the social studies and grammar tests that are coming home today.  They do not need to be signed and returned.

Please look in the Monday Envelope for information about the spell-a-thon and the spelling bee.

The Monte Gardens International Family Fest will be on Friday, January 19th, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. in the MU.  More information on this event will be coming home.

Language Arts:  We are reading two stories in Wonders, that relate to the essential question, "How are writers inspired by animals?" The comprehension strategy is literary elements-meter and rhyme, the comprehension skill is point of view, and the vocabulary strategy is similes and metaphors.   In grammar we will work on combining sentences.

Math: We are starting Chapter 14, Number Theory.  Students will find factors, work with prime and composite numbers, and review the rules for divisibility.

Social Studies: Students will begin working on a mission report that will be done in class.  They will be guided in the research, note taking and the writing process. (Some follow up work will be done at home if your student does not finish it in class.)

Writing: We are working on a historical fiction piece about a voyage on a galleon ship.
